Eastern Conference Seeding Race 2026
The Detroit Pistons own the top seed in the East by a wide margin. They sit at 44–14 and nothing has seriously threatened their grip on the No. 1 seed this season. Their hold looks very strong heading into the final stretch.
Behind the Pistons, the race for seeds 2 through 4 is tight and getting tighter. The Boston Celtics (39–20) lead that group. The New York Knicks (38–22) are just one game back. Cleveland (37–24) rounds out that three-team cluster after their second-half surge powered by the addition of James Harden at the trade deadline. This three-way battle could come down to the final week of the regular season.
Toronto (34–25) holds fifth and has been one of the East’s pleasant surprises. Philadelphia (33–26) is sixth but faces pressure from Orlando and Miami below them. The 6 through 8 range in the East is where the most drama lives right now.
The biggest battle in the East is for that 6-seed. Philadelphia, Orlando, and Miami are all separated by just a few games. Any of those three could end up in the Play-In. Every win or loss in this stretch matters.
Western Conference Seeding Race 2026
The Oklahoma City Thunder lead the West at 46–15 with the best record in the entire NBA. The Thunder look locked in for the West No. 1 seed, though the race behind them is anything but settled.
The San Antonio Spurs sit second at 43–16. That is a remarkable run for a young team built around Victor Wembanyama. The gap between OKC and San Antonio is three games. San Antonio is not going away quietly. The race for the West top seed is the most compelling storyline of the second half.
Houston (37–21) holds third. Denver (37–23) and Minnesota (37–23) are tied for fourth and fifth. The Lakers (34–24) sit sixth, Phoenix (34–26) seventh, and Golden State (31–28) holds the eighth spot. Four games separate third through eighth in the West. This conference is extremely deep.
The Western Conference has more depth than the East this season. One bad week can drop a team two full spots in the standings.
NBA Play-In Tournament Bubble Watch 2026
The Play-In Tournament gives seeds 7 through 10 a shot at the full playoffs. Here is where the bubble stands in both conferences through February 28, 2026.
Eastern Conference Bubble: Orlando (31–27) and Miami (31–29) hold the 7 and 8 spots right now. Atlanta (30–31) and Charlotte (29–31) are fighting for the last two Play-In slots. Both Atlanta and Charlotte are below .500. They need a strong finish just to stay in the picture.
Western Conference Bubble: Phoenix (34–26) holds the 7-seed. Golden State (31–28) sits eighth. Portland (29–31) and the LA Clippers (27–31) are both below .500 and right on the edge. Portland is only two games behind Golden State for the final direct playoff spot. A four-game losing streak from either bubble team could mean an early end to their season.
The Play-In runs April 14–17. The 7 vs. 8 winner gets the No. 7 seed directly. The loser gets one more chance against the winner of the 9 vs. 10 game. The loser of that final game is eliminated.
NBA Clinching Outlook 2026
No team has officially clinched a playoff spot yet as of February 28, 2026. Most teams have roughly 20 to 22 games remaining. But the math is closing in fast.
Closest to clinching: The Oklahoma City Thunder (46–15) and Detroit Pistons (44–14) are the two teams most likely to clinch first. Both carry large leads in their conferences. A few more wins over the next two to three weeks could get it done for either team.
Teams tracking toward elimination: The Sacramento Kings (14–47), Indiana Pacers (15–45), and Brooklyn Nets (15–44) are effectively out of playoff contention. None of them can realistically reach the Play-In at this stage of the season.
Check back here as teams begin to officially clinch. This page will be updated as it happens.
Key Seeding Races to Watch
With roughly 20 to 22 games left, here are the four races worth following closely every night.
OKC vs. San Antonio for the West No. 1 seed: The Thunder lead by three games. But San Antonio is playing elite basketball right now. If the Spurs go on a run and OKC stumbles, this race gets very interesting very fast.
Celtics vs. Knicks vs. Cavaliers for East seeds 2–4: Three teams within three games of each other. Boston wants the two seed. New York wants home court in Round 1. Cleveland just added James Harden and is surging. This three-way battle could come down to the final week of the regular season.
Rockets vs. Nuggets vs. Timberwolves for West seeds 3–5: All three teams sit at 37 wins. Houston leads on fewest losses, but Denver and Minnesota are right there. One bad week could drop any of these three teams two full spots.
East Play-In bubble — Atlanta vs. Charlotte: Both teams are below .500. Both need a strong finish just to secure a Play-In spot. One bad week could end either team’s season before April even arrives.
How Does the 2026 NBA Playoff Format Work?
The NBA playoffs use a 16-team format. Eight teams from each conference qualify. The top six seeds in each conference advance directly based on their regular season record.
Seeds 7 through 10 compete in the Play-In Tournament for the final two spots in each conference. The Play-In runs April 14–17, 2026.
Once the full 16-team bracket is set, every round is a best-of-seven series. The higher seed hosts Games 1, 2, 5, and 7. The four rounds are the First Round, Conference Semifinals, Conference Finals, and the NBA Finals.
The 2026 NBA Finals will tip off in June. The champion is crowned by late June.
