How NBA Standings Work?

NBA standings can look confusing at first. Here is a simple breakdown of what each column means and how teams earn their playoff spots.

Win-Loss Record

Every team plays 82 games in the regular season. A win goes in the W column and a loss goes in the L column. The team with the most wins at the end of the season finishes first in their conference.

Winning Percentage

This number tells you how often a team wins. Divide total wins by total games played and you get the winning percentage. The higher the percentage the better the team is performing that season.

Games Behind

GB shows how far back a team sits from the division or conference leader. The leader always shows a dash. A team with 5.0 GB needs to gain five full games on the leader to tie them at the top.

Conference Standings

The NBA has 30 teams split into two conferences. The East and the West each have 15 teams. The top eight teams from each conference make the playoffs. Seeds 1 through 6 go straight to the first round. Seeds 7 through 10 play in the Play-In Tournament for the last two spots.

Division Standings

Each conference has three divisions with five teams each. Winning a division does not change your playoff seed directly but it works as a tiebreaker in close races.

Play-In Tournament

The Play-In gives teams ranked 7th through 10th a shot at the playoffs. The 7-seed plays the 8-seed and the winner earns the 7th spot. The 9-seed plays the 10-seed and the loser goes home. The two remaining teams then play for the 8th seed.
