How the 2027 NBA Playoffs Work

Sixteen teams reach the playoff bracket, eight from each conference. Seeds 1 through 6 clinch on regular season record. Seeds 7 and 8 come out of the Play In Tournament.

• Play In: Teams 7 through 10 in each conference play. The 7 vs 8 winner takes the No. 7 seed. The 9 vs 10 loser is eliminated. The last spot goes to the winner of the 7 vs 8 loser against the 9 vs 10 winner.
• Series length: Every round is best of seven. First team to four wins advances.
• Home court: The 2-2-1-1-1 format gives the higher seed Games 1, 2, 5 and 7. The lower seed hosts Games 3, 4 and 6.
• No reseeding: The bracket is fixed. The 1 vs 8 winner always meets the 4 vs 5 winner in the semifinals.
